Electricians often work around tile and stone when installing receptacles, so having a unique selection of bits is essential. Let’s check out these carbide-tipped tile bits by Bosch and see how they do.
As a residential or commercial electrician, you’re bound to work around tile and/or stone backsplashes. In this type of environment, you’re guaranteed to have a tile-installer or two cover your boxes just enough that you can’t get a receptacle in them. You can either take a diamond grinder and try to cut the stone or perhaps all you need is a hole to fit a screw through the tile. You can’t simply slap a masonry bit in your hammer drill and go to town, especially with glass or porcelain tile – you’ll crack the tile. What you need is a carbide-tipped stone bit like this.
Another instance that I’d use these bits is when you need to drive an anchor or a toggle bolt into a wall that has stone or tile that’s really thin. For thick stone, I’d use a standard masonry bit on a rotary-hammer or a hammer-drill. However, for thin stone, or glass/porcelain tile I’d use a bit like this to get a hole through the tile, then I’d drill further into the sheetrock behind the tile. Sometimes when installing microwaves or vent-hoods you run into the finished tile and you need to drill through the tile, through the sheetrock, and into a stud to anchor the heavy appliance to something solid. These little bits are great for that job.
