I’ve been asking for a more compact vacuum for a long time, and Ridgid has finally answered the call. This little vacuum is all I keep on my truck because it fits neatly wherever I need to put it. Let’s open it up and look at what it offers.

The Ridgid/Emerson 4.5 Gal 5HP portable wet/dry vac is plenty powerful to handle any professional vacuum job you’ll come across. I use it every day to clean up my messes on jobs and I’ve found it has the perfect amount of power and capacity for what I do.

The vacuum. has two flaps on the sides that fold up to reveal all of the attachments, cord, and hose. I love this because most vacs have annoying solutions for the cords and hoses. They always end up unrolling/unraveling if they’re on the exterior of the vac. If you’re lucky you have a vac that is big enough that you can roll the hose up and store it inside, but that’s more of a pain to take apart and put back together every time. This thing packs up in a very convenient and logical way, which allows for it to be extremely compact and fit in with the rest of your tool boxes.

The cord that comes on this vacuum is 20 ft long! That’s insane. I’ve had vacs that have had longer cords than this, but 20 feet is more than ample for what you’d need in such a compact vacuum. The hose is collapsable/expandable so while it only looks to be about 3 feet long at first, once you stretch it you realize you get a full 7 feet out of it, which is perfect so you don’t have to lift it off the ground if you’re cleaning on top of a ladder.

When you open the kit up you see the filter on the inside. This is a very standard filter that can be removed when using the vacuum to suck up water. Be sure to do this or you’ll ruin the filter! Only use the filter when vacuuming dry messes.

The hose diameter is a little smaller than I like. Most of my shop vacs are 2 1/4” hoses, whereas this is around 1 3/4.” This isn’t a huge problem, it just means you have to stick to smaller chunks while vacuuming. The fact that it is portable and compact means you have to have some sacrifices somewhere, so I understand why this is the size it is.

Summary

This vac gets 5 out of 5 stars. It’s strong enough to suck a jet-line and mouse through an underground conduit, compact enough to fit in the inside of my truck without being a huge pain in the ass, and designed so that everything fits inside of it rather than crap hanging off everywhere to get tangled and broken. I take this little guy everywhere I go, super happy I have it.
