As a professional tradesmen out in the field every day, I’m not a huge user of Dremel’s tools because they don’t make anything that is designed for the pro user. They did send me this cool little craft tool, and I’m also an artist, so let’s put it to work.

First Impression

This thing seems like it is an arts and crafts thing more than it is a tool. My first thought when opening the package was like, “Hey, this is an engraving tool!” but it’s not really that, and there’s a lot of features to it.

There’s a ton of different bits and tips that come with this Stylo which is surprising that you can get all of these features in one tool. What the tool boasts is that you can do etching, engraving, polishing’s, and sanding of surfaces. The sanding wheels that come with it don’t seem like they’re really going to sand like a tradesman would think of sanding. They’re more for smoothing and polishing small craft items. The engraving is actually pretty decent. This tool will engrave glass, metal, tile, and plastic. What I would use this for is writing my name on all my tools and actually engraving it so that somebody can’t just marker over my name that I put in Sharpie and then steal my tools.

As an artist the idea of this tool actually interested me a lot more than as a tradesman. The fact that I can engrave art into wood, tile, glass, plastics, or many other materials is awesome because the style of art I do is line art so I need a tool that is very precise that can remove material or create lines in material. I started to mess around with drawing my name. What I did notice about the tool as I was using it at different power levels is that the variable speed knob allows it to go at a pretty high speed and a pretty low speed. The only drawback that I found with using it is that the variable speed knob moves a lot on its own. The vibration alone of using it at high-speed as you’re drawing or writing something with it, moves the knob and and all of a sudden the power will drop on you out of nowhere, and you have to reach back and turn the knob back up. This is something that is a pretty extreme design flaw when they’re advertising it as a variable speed tool, as the variable speed should stay at whatever speed you’re trying to use it at.

This is a pretty cool idea, but in practice I’m finding that it’s not very quality built. I do think that for the simple arts and crafts user, this is a neat little tool to have as long as you don’t put it under too much of a demand. I am a little disappointed even as an artist that I can’t use this thing at full speed without the power shifting on me and without the variable speed knob moving. I give this tool a 2.5 out of 5. I would’ve given it a 3 had the variable speed knob stayed at the settings that I put it at, but the fact that it’s a little dysfunctional and I’m not going to use it as a tradesman out on the field, I think a 2.5 is a pretty accurate representation of what I got out of using it.
