I’ve been getting to use a lot more Ryobi stuff over the past couple years, and I have to say they’ve definitely stepped up their game. I wouldn’t consider them a pro-grade option for tradesmen, but I have to admit – for literally anybody else these tools are providing a hell of a lot of power and value for their price.

First Impression

I was surprised when I opened this box up. The tool feels rugged, and immediately made me think…Whoa Ryobi, you’re putting some elbow grease into these tools nowadays! Ryobi has never marketed itself as a “PRO-grade” tool company – their tools are meant for the DIY or at-home user. However, lately, I’ve been finding their innovation and rigidity in design have made these a viable option for apprentices in the trades to have something to affordably start with.

Functionality

I use impact drivers on a pretty consistent basis, whether it’s screwing down materials, bolting racks together for services, or drilling holes in a number of different things. It’s nice to have an impact around because they offer more torque at lower speeds than a standard drill, and they’re more compact than a standard-sized drill.

I love that Ryobi put a small magnetic strip near the battery to store screws while you’re using the tool. Rather than having to keep them in your mouth or in your pouch, you can easily stick them to the tool while you use it. The magnet is strong, however there are definitely some screws and materials that are not magnetic and will not stick to it.

I love the fact that it comes with 3 speeds, though most impact drivers have this feature nowadays. It even has a triple LED ring around the chuck of the tool, so seeing what you’re drilling is no problem when working in the dark. The tool performed admirably when using it to drill and fasten strut together. The only issue I found was the size of the tool is rather bulky compared to other brands. It’s still very light-weight but the physical size of it is the largest out of any competitor.

Summary

I give this thing a 3.5 out of 5 stars, really more because I have many other impact drivers to compare it to. I’m a pro-user so I rely on tools that are built for pros. The size is an issue for me and the overall durability. I feel as if this Ryobi will break much easier than my DeWalt or Milwaukee will. Also, there are no compact battery options like both of these other brands have. Still a great tool for home or light use. Maybe even a good starter set at a reasonable price-point for an apprentice just entering the trades.
